Dean Barr

A service celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Ordination of the Very Reverend Norman Barr will be held in Christ Church, Derriaghy on Sunday 12th November at 6.30pm. The preacher will be the Bishop of Connor, the Rt Rev Alan Harper.

Mr Barr was made Deacon in St Patricks Church, Ballymena on Sunday 24th March 1946 and was Ordained Priest in St Marys Church, Crumlin Road, Belfast, on Sunday 22nd December of the same year. He served as Curate of Ballymena (1946-52); Curate of St Annes Cathedral Mission based at the Mariners Church Hall, Nelson Street, Belfast (1952-54); Rector of Duneane and Ballyscullion (1954-58); Curate-in-charge of Whiterock, Belfast (1958-61) and became Rector of Derriaghy in January 1961 where he stayed until his retirement in October 1990.

He was Domestic Chaplain to the Bishop of Connor (1956-71); Examining Chaplain (1971-90); Rural Dean of Derriaghy (1972-90); Prebendary of Cairncastle in the Chapter of St Saviour, Connor (1980-82); Dean of Connor (1982-90); and Honorary Clerical Secretary of the Diocese (1984-90). Mr Barr also served as Chairman of the Down, Connor and Dromore Library Committee; played an active part in the production of the Connor Clergy Succession List and is still an active member of the Connor Graveyard Committee.

Many parishioners of Derriaghy will be interested to recall that his brother, the late Reverend Canon Osborne Barr, served his first curacy in Derriaghy 1946-48.
