Former Lisburn Cathedral Rector is guest at Magheragall Parish

The Rev. Canon John McCammon and his wife Margaret, recently returned from Kajiado in Kenya working with the Church Missionary Society Ireland (C.M.S.I.) were the special guests at morning worship in Magheragall Parish Church last Sunday.

John was the Rector of Lisburn Cathedral from February 1982 to September 1998 when he got a call to the Kajiado Diocese in Kenya.  They left for Kenya in June 1999 in response to a request for help in establishing a dedicated programme of Bible teaching in this rapidly growing diocese.  John worked as the co-ordinator of the Theological Education by Extension programme (TEE) in Kajiado, whilst Maragret provided the necessary administrative backup, which the programme requires, and also assisted in classes.  Their work involved travel right across the diocese, often involving long, hot journeys on bumpy, dusty roads.  They have now returned for good and are currently visiting Parishes that supported them to say thanks and share something of the work they did in Kenya.

Magheragall Parish was one of the churches that supported them and last Sunday, Margaret gave the address at the Family Service called Sunday’s Cool at 10.15am and John gave the address at the Morning Prayer Service at 11.30am.  The Rector, the Rev. Nicholas Dark, led both of the morning services and during refreshments (served between the two services) the congregation had the opportunity to meet and chat with John and Margaret about their missionary work in Kenya.

During the service Bronwen Dark presented 16 year-old Kerri Cunningham, a member of the Church with a cheque for £1,474 on behalf of the congregation.  Kerri, a student at Laurehill Commmunity College, is a member of a CMSI team from local parishes that is going to Kajiado this summer, where their ambitious task is to build a ‘church’ in a month.
