The annual ‘Relief of Derry Parade and Service’ was held in Lisburn on Sunday 2nd August. Lisburn Royal Black District Chapter No 1 hosted the event in conjunction with Largymore Royal Black District Chapter No 9 and Apprentice Boys of Derry, No Surrender Club, Lisburn Branch. They were joined by Sir Knights from Lower Iveagh Royal Black District Chapter No 1 and Apprentice Boys from Broomhedge, Dunmurry and Hillsborough Branches. The parade assembled at Lisburn Orange Hall and led by Mavemacullen Accordion Band (Tandragee), made its way to Christ Church via Wallace Avenue, Seymour Street, Castle Street, Bow Street and Market Place returning via Market Place, Bow Street, Antrim Street, Bachelor’s Walk and Railway Street. Batt’s Purple Star, Ballycoan, Lisburn Young Defenders and Pride of Prince William Flute Bands also took part in the parade.

The senior minister of Christ Church, the Rev John Pickering, former rector of Drumcree, led the service and the preacher was the Rev David McCarthy (District Chaplain of Lisburn RBDC No 1). Renee Madden presided at the organ and together with the church choir led the congregational hymns which included, ‘O worship the King’, ‘I need thee every hour’ and ‘Thine be the glory’. In a challenging address based on Luke 23 v 33, Mr McCarthy spoke about the three crosses at Calvary’s Hill, and referred to a Hardened Sinner, a Humble Sinner and a Holy Saviour. He urged all to seek salvation in the finished work of Christ and have the assurance of heaven in their lives!

Sir Knight David Burleigh, Worshipful District Master of Lisburn RBDC No 1 concluded the service by thanking all who attended the service and gave a special thanks to all who took part.
