by NEIL GREENLEES

A 58 year-old Dromore woman who remains critically ill after she was struck by a car at the Al carriageway has been named locally as teacher Mrs. Jennifer Thompson.

Mrs. Thompson, who had been walking near the the A1/Banbridge Road junction on Boxing Day, suffered a number of injuries when she was struck by a silver BMW shortly after 3pm.

She remains in a critical condition in the intensive care unit at Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital.

Local sources say Mrs. Thompson, who regularly goes walking in the local park and throughout town, is the daughter of the late Rev. Hugh Moore, well-known former minister at Banbridge Road Presbyterian Church.

A teacher, she taught at Dromore High School until 1977, when she was head of the geography department; she has since worked on a temporary basis at a number of schools in the area, including Banbridge High and Dromore High. Police themselves said the Al was busy at the time of the accident and they are appealing to any witnesses who were using the road to get in touch with them.

Anyone who can help police is asked to call on 0845 600 8000 or use the Crimestoppers number 0800555111.
