A FORMER Ulster Star photographer who now works for leading photo agency Presseye achieved a phenomenal hat trick at this year's Allied Irish Bank Photojournalism Awards which showcase and reward the very best of press photography in Ireland.
Darren Kidd received three prizes when the results were announced at a ceremony in Dublin's Crowne Plaza Hotel. His work took both first and second place in the Sports Action Category and he came second in Sports Features.
His success is all the more impressive because entries for this year's awards reached a record high with over 1,900 images submitted by 120 photographers.
The photographs were judged by an impressive international panel chaired by RTE's Director of Communications Bride Rosney.
She was joined by renowned Picture Editor and Photographer Eamonn McCabe and Le Monde's Deputy Photo Editor Mathieu Polak.
The Director of Presseye Kelvin Boyes paid a warm tribute to the former Star photographer: "It's a great honour for Darren to have picked up three awards after being chosen from the cream of Irish press photographers," he said.
