Well known Lisburn trader passes away

IT was the end of an era when a well known Lisburn business man passed away peacefully last month.

Eric McKnight, who ran a store in Market Square for 30 years selling bed clothes and ladies' fashions and household items, died on February 7 at Rathfriland Manor, in his 87th year.

Formerly of Cascum, Moira Road, Lisburn, Mr McKnight was the dearly loved husband of the late Anna who worked in the business with her husband. The couple who didn't have any children, met when they both ran sections in Young's Department Store, which was also in the heart of Lisburn. Mr Mcknight branched out on his own in 1959 and set up his own store with Anna working
alongside him. The business closed in 1989 after 30 years trade.

Percy McCall of McCalls in Lisburn described the late Mr McKnight as a "respected gentleman".

"He was very friendly with my father Robert who worked with him in Youngs," Mr McCall explained.

"They shared a lot in common and were like brothers in many ways. And when they both retired they went back to their farming roots - something they both enjoyed.

"He was very kind to my brother Meryn and myself."

A service was held Maze Presbyterian Church and Mr McKnight was buried at Loughbrickland Presbyterian Graveyard.
