the trading elements of HMSO were privatised in 1996, and has
been the official publisher to Parliament for more than 200
years and is now the largest UK publisher by volume,
publishing over 11,000 books and CD-ROMs a year.

The trading businesses of the former HMSO were sold
to the National Publishing Group on 30 September 1996 and
these are now trading as The
Stationery Office Limited.
Although the whole of HMSO was privatised, the Controller of
HMSO undertook certain functions on behalf of the Crown which
were not undertaken by Parliament or any nominated Government
department. The Controller has for many years, been appointed
by Letters Patent as Queen's Printer of Acts of Parliament and
administrator of Crown

which go back into the last century.
