Son of Mrs Loreen Patterson and the late Mr Robert Patterson, Leslie was brought up in Magherahamlet, near Ballynahinch. He attended Magherahamlet Parish Church and later, Edengrove Presbyterian Church (Ballynahinch). After attending the University of Ulster at Jordanstown (1999-2002) where he obtained a BSc (Hons) degree in Youth and community Work, he attended Union Theological College Belfast (2002-2005) where he obtained a Dip.Min (Diploma in Ministry) and M.Div (Master of Divinity). He was licensed on 25th June 2005 at Edengrove Presbyterian Church in Ballynahinch and started his full-time assistantship at McQuiston Memorial Presbyterian Church on 13th June 2005.

Having lived in and around the Belfast area for the last five years, his new charge at Loughaghery and Cargycreevy is something of a homecoming. Mr Patterson succeeds the Rev David McConaghy who retired in April 2002.

The service was conducted by the Moderator of Dromore Presbytery, the Rev Gary Trueman (Minister of Banbridge Road Presbyterian Church, Dromore) assisted by the Clerk, the Rev John Davey (Minister of Hillsborough Presbyterian Church). The Rev Bobby Liddell (Legacurry) read the Scripture lesson, the Rev John Brackenridge (First Lisburn) gave the address and Dr Bert Tosh gave the charge to the new minister and the people.

Mrs Carol Patton presided at the organ. A combined choir from Loughaghery and Cargycreevy sang the Introit 'Come, let us worship the Lord'. The congregational hymns were, 'O Lord my God! when I in awesome wonder', 'Oh, to see the dawn of the darkest day', 'King of Kings, Majesty', and 'To God be the glory! great things He has done!'

The Rev Patterson thanked the Commission for organising and conducting the service and paid particular thanks to Dr Tosh. Addressing the two congregations he said, 'We stand ready with all sorts of possibilities before us but it is our responsibility to seek God's leading for the future of our respective congregations'. He thanked them for calling him to be their minister and asked them to be patient while he settles into his new charge. Speaking on behalf of his fiancé and himself, Mr Patterson said he was delighted to be coming as minister of the two congregations and was looking forward to getting to know them individually.

After the service, the Rev Gary Trueman welcomed Mr Patterson to the Presbytery of Dromore. Mr Norman McKinney (Clerk of Session, Loughaghery) and Mr William Campbell (Clerk of Session, Cargycreevy) spoke on behalf of the two congregations and the Rev Canon Robert Howard, Rector of Annahilt and Magherahamlet on behalf of the neighbouring churches. The Rev Robert Beggs of McQuiston Memorial Presbyterian Church (Belfast), where Mr Patterson was Assistant Minister, brought greetings.

Refreshments were served afterwards in the Moorhead Hall providing the opportunity for members of both congregations to welcome their new minister and his fiancé Laura: they plan to marry on Wednesday 2nd January 2008 in McQuiston Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Mr Patterson commenced his ministry by conducting communion services last Sunday (21st October) at 10.30am in Loughaghery and at 12.30pm in Cargycreevy.
