LISBURN girl Claire Kearney has been putting on her running
shoes on a regular basis lately as she prepares to take part in
the Budapest Half Marathon in aid of Action Cancer this
September.
21-year-old Claire, who will be taking part
in the run with her friend Steven Fairfield, is hoping to raise
at least 800 for the charity which is close to her heart.
She explained, "My grandmother died of breast
cancer, which is one of the main reasons for taking part.
" I also work for Action Cancer so I see everyday what is
going on. The clinic is so great, I see the work they do and
where the money will go - towards the Action Cancer Big Bus, the
screening services and counselling services."
Claire has been training hard over the past
few months as she prepares herself for the 13 mile challenge.
I'm getting a lot better," she explained. "The first time I went
out I couldn't even do a mile but I'm going out four nights a
week now and doing about four miles. I've been told if I can do
about eight miles the adrenalin and the inspiration you get from
the crowd will get you the rest of the way."
Claire will be seeing how far her training
has come along when she takes part in the Lisburn Half Marathon
on June 20. She has also organised a series of fundraising
events to help her meet, and hopefully beat, her target.
"I've raised about 200 and I'll be holding a
pub quiz in Hagues Bar on June 11, which will hopefully be well
supported," she added.
