David Byers, Chief Executive of the Ulster Orchestra |
MATTHEW Nesbitt and Lauren Mulholland, pupils
at Friends School in Lisburn, were among ten young composers who
unveiled individually composed pieces of work to fellow A and
AS-Level students from across Northern Ireland during a unique
day of musical performance and training at the Elmwood Hall,
Belfast.
The event marked the end of an initiative
developed jointly by the Ulster Youth Orchestra and the Ulster
Orchestra's Education Department, which was designed to promote
musical composition skills among the ten young musicians
selected for the programme.
The students, aged between 16 and 18, came
together at the beginning of October for the first of three
training sessions and composition
workshops led by the Ulster Orchestra's
Associate Composer and award-winning composer, Brian Irvine.
The Music Composition Programme is part of
the Ulster Youth Orchestra's Outreach Series of musical
appreciation and training courses which was launched in 2006,
and which involved students from the five Education and Library
Boards across Northern Ireland.
