LISBURN nurses have been honoured for their
dedication at this year's prestigious RCN Northern Ireland Nurse
of the Year Awards.
Lagan Valley Hospital nurses June Cairns and
Brenda Carson were delighted to be recognised as June scooped
the Team Manager Award for her work as Ward Manager in the
Rehabilitation Unit and Brenda was awarded the Chief Nursing
Officer's award for her role as Patient Safety Officer covering
both Lagan Valley and the Downe Hospital.
Valerie Hall from Magheralin and Angela
Pollock from Lisburn were also rewarded for their work. Valerie
was commended in the main Northern Ireland Nurse of the Year
Award and Angela was runner-up in the Team Manager Award.
June is Ward Manager in the Rehabilitation
Unit of LVH. Her nominator said: "June is an example to others
of what can be achieved with drive, commitment, enthusiasm and
overall, a sense of wanting to make things better and safer for
the patients to whom we provide care."

Brenda was nominated for her leadership of
the former Down Lisburn Trust's Safer Patients Initiative, which
is funded by the Health Foundation in London.
Her nominator said: "Brenda's leadership and
commitment has encouraged and promoted empowered team-working,
driving and developing practice that has improved patient safety
throughout acute services."
Valerie is Lead Specialist Nurse at the
Regional Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre at Belfast City Hospital.
Her nominator said: "Valerie has the ability to make things
happen. I believe she is a terrific role model, not only within
nursing but in the wider health care community in Northern
Ireland."
Angela is Ward Sister of Allen Ward, at the
Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, Angela was nominated
for her leadership qualities, personal skills and expert
clinical skills.
Mary Hinds, RCN Northern Ireland Director,
said: "Congratulations to June, Brenda, Valerie and Angela on
their success in the awards.
"These awards demonstrate the good practice and innovations
that are taking place throughout hospitals and in the community
in Northern Ireland. It is clear that nurses are playing a
leading role in modernising Northern Ireland's health services
and making a real difference to people's lives."
