LISBURN Rotary Club has awarded its annual
bursary to a student who will put her medical skills to good use
in India this summer.
Helen Groves, who attends Queens University,
was delighted when she was told she was this year's recipient of
the 500 award.
She said: "I was told about the various
bursaries available to medical students during their elective
year and I applied to Lisburn Rotary Club and got an interview.
I couldn't believe it when they offered the bursary to me. I
feel very privileged to have been selected.'
The Rathriland girl will spend her time at
the Duncan Hospital in Raxauil, which is located at the
foothills of the Himalayas.
"I'll be working with the Emmanuel Hospital Association and
this was organised for me by the 'Serving In Mission' group,"
explained Helen.
"I will spend six weeks helping the medical
team by assisting in surgery and working on the wards and I hope
to also get involved with community health projects.
"The area I am going to is remote and
mountainous and it will be good to have the chance to experience
a new culture. I am really looking forward to it and I would
like to thank the Rotary Club in Lisburn for their support."
