OLD Scholar Maureen McCoy visited Friends Prep during their sixth Annual Health and Fitness Week and gave a talk to the pupils about her recent swim across the across the English Channel from Dover to Calais in July. The focus this year was on the Commonwealth Games and at the beginning of the week, pupils took part in an interactive question and answer session with three local badminton players - Alex Sim, Scott Burnside and David Geddes.

Pupils had to research the players, the sport and the Commonwealth Games to prepare for this session.

Alex and David shared memories of their Commonwealth Games experiences and pupils were delighted to, try on shirts and jackets that were worn at the Opening Ceremony. During the week, all pupils took part in badminton coaching sessions and watched demonstration match between Scott and Alex. Talks were also given by representatives of Action Cancer regarding healthy living and Headways on cycling safety.

Coach Scott Burnside of Friends Prep with P5 pupils following their badminton coaching sessionEach class also planted different fruit and vegetables — researching information on their use and how best to grow them.

Pupils will now have to tend to their crop and look forward to sampling the produce.

It is hoped that many items may be used by the Foundation Stage pupils when making their healthy break time snacks in school.
