Get your skates on - the Lisburn ice rink's open

LISBURN'S temporary ice rink is due to open this Friday morning.

The Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Allan Ewart launches the Christmas Skating Rink and Santa's Grotto with some help from Councillor Jenny Palmer, Chairman of the Council's Economic Development Committee and Santa Claus.Local people will be able to get their skates on and head to Castle Gardens for some winter fun with the official opening of Lisburn's first ever outdoor skating rink. With the Festive Season now in full swing, there will be a chance to try out your moves on the ice as part of the final celebrations for Lisburn's 400th Anniversary. The ice rink, which is sponsored by Lisburn City Council, will be open seven days a week until Sunday January 3 and the organisers believe it will be the perfect family treat over the holidays.

And since Christmas wouldn't be complete without a visit to Father Christmas himself Santa will be in residence in his Grotto in Castle Gardens from December 11 up to Christmas Eve.

The Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Allan Ewart, said it was exciting that a skating rink had been brought to Castle Gardens for the very first time.

"This skating rink provides the ideal opportunity for families to try something novel, in the heart of the City, with the wonderful backdrop of the recently restored Castle Gardens" he said.

"We wanted to inject a real Christmas atmosphere into the City's Festive Calendar and we hope this attraction will not only bring visitors to the City, but also provide some traditional Christmas cheer for our residents. "Children under 8 will be required to be accompanied by an adult on the rink and all children need to be accompanied by an adult when visiting Santa's Grotto."

The Skating Rink will be open seven days a week: Mon-Fri 10am- 9pm, Saturday 10am7pm and Sun 1pm-6pm; excluding Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Santa's Grotto will be open seven days a week: Mon-Fri 1pm-6pm, Saturday 10am-6pm and Sun 1pm-6pm. Santa's Grotto will be alongside the skating rink and for the cost of admission there will be a photo and present available for the child.
