MAYOR of Lisburn, Councillor Allan Ewart joined with a host of invited guests to congratulate Dame Mary Peters (DBE) on her 70th Birthday, at a Gala Dinner held at Lagan Valley Island.
The celebratory dinner, organised by the Mary Peters Trust, recognised Dame Mary's inspirational achievements on and off the track and the vital role she continues to play as a Patron for sport and for Northern Ireland.
Speaking at the birthday dinner, Mr Ewart said: "I speak on behalf of Lisburn City Council in firstly saying a heartfelt thank you to Dame Mary Peters, who is known and respected not only in Northern Ireland and in the rest of the United Kingdom, but world-wide, for her tremendous contribution to sport. Mary touches people's lives wherever she goes and as a valued Freeman of the City of Lisburn this Council is pleased and proud to have worked closely with Dame Mary on so many successful initiatives. She is a true inspiration."
As part of the evening's proceedings, Mr Allan Ewart presented Dame Mary with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the people of Lisburn and the elected members of the Council.
Speaking of her involvement in promoting the City of Lisburn for Olympic training, Dame Mary Peters said: "Lisburn is and always has been close to my heart. The many great sporting facilities we have here in the City are perfect training venues for athletes and as a resident and Freeman of the City of Lisburn it is my pleasure in promoting these wherever I travel."
