THE Principal of Killowen Primary School, Mrs Fiona Crory, has said she is delighted the school has been crowned 'Green Primary of the Year.
The Lisburn school fought off stiff competition from over 300 schools across Northern Ireland to win the prestigious contest organised by Tesco and Action Renewables. Aimed at encouraging pupils from primary and post primary schools to take responsibility for the environment, this inaugural competition received over 900 individual entries from local schools.
The judges had an extremely difficult task and commented on the high quality of entries. They said of the winners: "Killowen has a brilliant eco-calendar of events and a real effort is made from all students across all activities."
Mrs Crory explained the whole of the school was involved in 'green' projects, including making compost, growing vegetables, switching off lights and conserving energy.
"We are delighted," she said. "We have been working very hard over the past few years and everybody in the school, including children, teachers, classroom assistants and parents, have been involved.
"This award recognises the work that has gone in by the children and they just love it." Killowen Primary School received 5,000 Tesco Schools Vouchers, which can be used to purchase equipment and resources for exploring nature, outdoor learning and saving energy.
