THE Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) will be holding the annual Simon Dickey Memorial Concert this year in the Lagan Valley Island Conference Centre on Friday May 13 at 7.30pm.
The Simon Dickey Memorial Concert has taken place since 2003 and this year blind singer Denise Leigh will be the guest performer. The event will showcase the musical and vocal talents of two local blind performers as well. Denise Leigh is the winner of Channel 4's Operatunity: a nationwide search to find an amateur singer who could be trained intensively, terrified, have cameras stuck in their face, and survive long enough to sing the role of Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto at the home of the English National Opera, the London Coliseum. Since her operatic debut in 2003 Denise has gone on to sing all over the world, appearing in opera and oratorio throughout Europe and visiting Dubai with her husband/accompanist Stefan Andrusyschyn to raise money for Foresight, a charity funding ground breaking research into sight loss. She has recorded two best selling albums on the EMI Classics label, and continues to appear regularly on TV and radio as a studio guest.
In 2008 she was invited to take part in the Samsung Marriage of Excellence concert in Beijing, part of the Olympic celebrations which was broadcast all over the world.
Local contemporary artists, Andrea Begley and Joe Kenny will also be
performing at the event.
