HISTORY

The Parish of Killaney was first referred to in a charter of 1194 granted by John de Courcy. The ancient church and graveyard were established on a low hill overlooking Bow Lough. During the uprising in 1641 the church was badly damaged and never rebuilt although a graveyard still remains on the site. In the period from the above date until the middle of the 19th century Rectors were still appointed to the Parish of Killaney although no church existed. The parishioners met in various locations including the Presbyterian Church Hall and Carricknaveigh Old School. In 1865 the Marquis of Downshire generously donated land to build a church and work began in August of that year. The Church was consecrated on Thursday 19th April 1867 in the name of Saint John the Evangelist and was known as such until approximately 1904. It is not known when or in what circumstances the church became known as Saint Andrew’s. It was referred to as such for the first time on 3rd October 1915.

The church and spire have recently been refurbished and floodlit and is listed in the European Heritage Open Days Programme.

The Rev John Auchmuty, who was instituted here in March 2001, moved to Belfast when he became Rector of St Columba’s, Knock on Monday 3rd September 2007. The Revd William Nixon, former curate of Hillsborough Parish Church (May 2002 - April 2006) and Emmanuel Church in Edinburgh (April 2006 - February 2008), was instituted as the new Rector of the grouped parishes of Killaney and Carryduff (Diocese of Down) by the Right Revd Harold Miller, Bishop of Down & Dromore, at a Service of Institution in St Ignatius’s Church, Carryduff on Friday 15th February.
