LISBURN Mayor Allan Ewart recently hosted a reception at Lagan Valley Island, in honour of the Antrim Saffrons who won the West County Hotel Cup for Ladies Gaelic Football.

The All-Ireland Junior Ladies Gaelic Football Championship, sponsored by TG4, is an annual knockout competition and the Saffron's successfully defeated Limerick to win their first All-Ireland Final. Councillor Ewart, speaking about the Championship, said: "It is fantastic that Antrim won the TG4 All-Ireland Junior Ladies Gaelic Football Championship last year and I would like to congratulate the winning team and their coaching staff for their considerable success. "This reception has been held to acknowledge the significant achievement made by these ladies who play for a local team; with four of  the players residing in the Lisburn area. Such a sporting accomplishment has enabled the team to secure a place in the 20I0 Intermediate Championship. I wish them every success in this new tournament," he concluded.

Gerardine McCann, Antrim Captain said: "It is a privilege to have been invited to Lisburn by the Mayor for a dedicated reception, in honour of my team and representatives of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association of Ireland. The team and our followers will always remember the final fondly and we look forward to continuing our success in the forthcoming year. It is great to know that everyone is supporting us in our games."

The Mayor presented the winning team with a piece of engraved crystal in recognition of their sporting achievement.
