LOCAL nurse Ruth Magill recently helped to launch the Runher Challenge 2010 for fun loving females of all fitness abilities, which will help to raise funds for Cash for Kids.

Ruth, who is a member of Lagan Valley Athletic Club, is one of the 'angels' from the childrens' surgical Craig Ward at the Ulster Hospital who are competing along with 2000 others in the family focused event at Stormont on Sunday June 13.

Most of the nurses in the team will be walking or jogging the 5K, but they are taking their inspiration from work colleague Ruth.

The local woman is one of Northern Ireland's top women runners in her age group having won a world silver team medal at the the World Masters Championships in Finland last July.

Ruth said: "I took part in Runher a couple of years ago and there is a fantastic atmosphere with so many women together of all abilities and ages.

"There are so many people who take part; old and young. It's nice to see everybody together and just by signing up your initial fee goes to charity. I'm looking forward to it again this year."

Ruth added: "I'd like as many women as possible to come along. You don't have to be a runner or a fit athlete to join in; it's for everybody, although it may encourage some people to take up running, which is a fantastic exercise."

Now in its fourth year, the event attracted over 2000 women of all abilities in 2009 to come walking, jogging or running around a 5k or a 10k course at Stormont Estate. This year for the first time there will also be a free kids one mile run for boys and girls.

The Ulster Hospital team are the first to sign up to compete for the Workplace Challenge Perpetual Trophy which was introduced last autumn for the biggest team entering. The normal £15 entry is reduced to £12 for teams over 10 and to £10 for teams of 25 or more.
