SHOPPERS at the Tesco store in Bentrim Road have helped the Rotary Club of Lisburn raise £10,000 for four local charities in the run up to Christmas.

Despite the freezing weather members of Rotary, Lisburn Inner Wheel and the four charities, were present beside a 25 foot tree as customers were invited to purchase a charity ribbon which was then attached to the tree.

And on Friday the four groups - CLIC Sargent, the Motor Neurone Society, Cancer Research UK and the Children's Heartbeat Trust - received the money at a special lunch in Dunmurry Golf Club.

A delighted Trevor Stewart, president of the Rotary Club of Lisburn, said the sum had exceeded their expectations.

"I would like to thank the shoppers at Tesco for purchasing our ribbons. To raise £10,000 in just over two weeks was fantastic.

"I must also thank the willing volunteers such as Shirley McMinn President of Inner Wheel and her team, volunteers from the Motor Neurone Society, the Lisburn committee of Cancer Research UK, the Children's Heartbeat Trust at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Clic Sargent and Anne Broome, Community Champion at Tesco in Lisburn."

The Tree of Life Campaign in Lisburn was one of six across Northern Ireland which has raised in excess of £70,000 during December 2010.

It was a great opportunity to explain the work that Rotary and Inner wheel do for Lisburn and its communities as well as raising money for such worthy causes" said Trevor.
